Sirna Therapeutics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc. has been selected as a winner of the 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility, one of eight honorees in the greater San Francisco area. This prestigious award recognizes employers that are successfully using workplace flexibility to meet both employer and employee goals.
Employer responses are measured against national data from Families and Work Institute’s National Study of Employers. As a winner, Sirna Therapeutics, ranks in the top 20 percent -- the 80th percentile -- of employers nationally in terms of flexible work programs, policies and culture.
A wide range of working arrangements, including occasional flexibility, are available to Sirna employees. "Work flexibility is part of our culture. It's good for our employees and it is good for our business," says Dr. Alan Sachs, Sirna Therapeutics site head and VP of Basic Research.
At the Sirna site, employees are encouraged to volunteer and be involved in their community, part of the Merck Dollars for Doers program. Technical seminars and other learning opportunities are provided to the staff through partnerships with local universities and research organizations. And to keep it fun, the site has monthly social gatherings to recognize employees' accomplishments, to celebrate birthdays and recognize holidays.
